1) Current Book Project

My current book project has a working title of “A Patient’s Guide to Therapy for the Adult Child of an Alcoholic”.

I was in therapy from December 4, 2008 to August 09, 2010. During that time I took many notes covering my sessions
and what was happening to me in between sessions. I continued to take notes after therapy ended, recording my
ongoing symptoms and observations. I started taking notes to help me get the most out of the therapy sessions.
After a number of sessions I realized I wanted to take all my notes and write book.

I have completed my initial manuscript and now I need to revise and edit. I am blogging the sections of my existing
manuscript, in order, so that anyone that is interested can review and provide comments. I am looking for advice on
the ordering of the topics discussed, a title for my book, cover art, as well as price points for printed and ebook
versions.

I am also looking for an editor. I have paid to have my existing manuscript reviewed by a professional editor. They
told me my book is mainly memoir with some how-to. Since my book is about my experience with therapy, I don’t think
the how-to information I offer is enough to write a how-to book about therapy in general. On the other hand, I think
the how-to that I do offer is very useful to persons considering therapy. My goal it so produce a book that is almost
entirely a memoir, but with the how-to information that I think is really useful to potential patients.

Therefore, I’m looking for an editor for my memoir, that contains some how-to information. I am also looking for
advice on cover art and how to best promote my book when I publish it.

If you have any comments or advice for me, please contact me, I would like to discuss any or all of these issues
with you. If I can help you with your writing and publishing projects, please let me know, I’d like to help.

2) My Writing Process

I have been writing for many years and the way I get my writing done has changed a lot. I wanted to describe, in
detail, the environment, equipment and the process that has worked for me. What works for me continues to change
as I become older, have more time to write and the technology available to me and that I am required to interact
with evolves as well.

3) Self Publishing

With my current book project, I have to adapt to the times. Even if my manuscript were accepted with a formal
publisher, from what I read online, I would still have to promote my book on my own. Whether a book project is
working through a traditional publisher or will be self-published, it is largely up to the author to promote the
book. Since my previous publishing experience was with technical books and a traditional publisher back in the
1990s, I had a lot to learn.

I describe the process I have been going through to determine all the options available to me for self-publishing
and how to decide what is best for me. All the decisions I have made are described, including the cost and time it
has taken me to get my book self-published.

4) Traditional Publishing

My first writing and publishing experience was back in the 1990s when I wrote me first technical book. This was
a very traditional publishing experience, back in a time when the term ‘Internet’ wasn’t formally defined. I
think it is interesting to describe how it worked back then for those that are writing and publishing now, to see
how far we have come and how much the process has changed. If anyone is longing for a traditional publishing
experience, what I describe may convince you that the old ways were not better.

5) Ongoing Recovery

Since my first self-published book is focused on my experiences with therapy, I wanted to continue to document
my recovery. This includes my symptoms as they reoccur and my observations over time about what I learned in
therapy.

6) Book Reviews

I have been reviewing books from my professional work for many years and those book reviews can be found on this
website under the link on the home page “Oracle DBA/FMW”. These book reviews cover my work as an Oracle Database
Administrator (DBA) and my more recent experience as an Oracle Fusion Middleware administrator (FMW).

Now that I am self-publishing, I wanted to provide book reviews for the books (and websites) that I am using to
learn what I need to achieve this goal. This blog will describe how I decided what books I wanted to read and
how I used what I learned to build my own website and get my book self-published.

7) Volunteering

Volunteering has been a big part of my life for many years. I believe volunteering helped me cope with the
issues that led me to therapy. I am volunteering more than ever now and I want to describe those efforts and
how they continue to help me with my ongoing recovery.

8) Model Railroading

I have enjoyed model railroading for most of my life and have built several model train layouts. I have long wanted
to document those efforts for myself. More recently, as I made the transition from Marklin 3-rail AC model trains
to 2-rail DCC, I have worked through many projects, including my most recent layout. I describe all of my previous
model train layouts and provide details of all the projects that I am working on as I build up my latest DCC layout.

9) Product/Service Reviews

I wanted to have a blog for posting reviews of products and services because I find, many times, the mainstream
process for this doesn’t allow for any review that isn’t universally positive. For example, I booked several tours
in the UK and while my reviews of them were almost perfect, I noticed that the tour operator solicited and accepted
my reviews, but never published them on their website. I now wonder how many major product and service
suppliers do this, because many times, I see all the customer reviews provide not a single criticism of the vendor’s
products or services.
